The controversial nature of this topic was reflected in the different viewpoints expressed by the audience which included many BPEG, Discipline of Accounting and other faculty members, representatives from professional bodies, corporates and the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
Corporate Responsibility and the Tobacco Industry: an Oxymoron

The Business and Professional Ethics Group, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Sydney, hosted a seminar presented by Professor Simon Chapman on the topic of Corporate Responsibility and the Tobacco Industry: an Oxymoron. A regular writer on public health matters in leading Australian newspapers, and succeeded by his abundant honours, attendees enjoyed discussion regarding, Is the tobacco industry and ordinary industry and could a tobacco company ever be ethical, What constitutes an informed decision and is selling of dangerous products ever ethical?, and Is philanthropy a mere tactic? A most interesting afternoon was then followed by refreshments at the Darlington Centre.
Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Inclusion

The CSR Practitioners Group, Sydney and the Business and Professional Ethics Group jointly hosted a dialogue with Senator Ursula Stephens (Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector) titled, Corporate Social Responsibility and Social Inclusion.
Professor Marcus O Connor, Pro Dean of the University of Sydney, welcomed all guests to the Darlington Centre to discuss such an important and economic topic. Acting Chair David Morrissey of CSR introduced the Corporate Social Responsibility Practitioners Group, followed by Nonna Martinov-Bennie who was representing the Business and Professional Ethics Group (BPEG) from the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Sydney.
The feedback from the meeting proved most encouraging. Attendees enjoyed the workshop style of the forum and the opportunity to interact, with people with similar attitudes and passions and especially with a Government representative who has a keen interest in this area. Due to its success, participants expressed a desire to take the conversation to the next step in the future.

Conference on Social and Environmental Accounting Research (CSEAR)
2 - 4 December 2007
The 6th Annual Conference on Social and Environmental Accounting Research (CSEAR) will be hosted by the Discipline of Accounting at the University of Sydney's Darlington Campus from 2-4 December 2007. The conference is an informal gathering of researchers, teachers, students, and practitioners concerned with research, teaching and practice in social and environmental accounting in it widest sense. Normally limited to a maximum of 60 delegates, the emphasis is on a high level of interaction, discussion and debate in a friendly, supportive and relaxed atmosphere.

Australian Manager of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index in Australia - The AuSSi Sam Index
Topic: Corporate responsibility and sustainability are rapidly emerging as critically important issues. Financial markets and sustainable investment can also play a part in addressing these issues, including the very important policy debate surrounding climate change. Francis will discuss the mechanics of the Index including its origins, what it measures/tells us, who uses it, how Australia compares with other countries etc. He will then discuss the wider context of the Index in terms of the extent to which it is beginning to change business practice (ethical impacts) and enhance corporate sustainability and social responsibility more generally.
